Mindset is important when you are attempting to do work during a world-class crisis – and when I say world -class, it is a crisis along the lines of a world war or a global pandemic.
Yes, as I write this we(myself and the whole world) are still grappling with a virus the likes of which was not seen since a century prior —not since the ‘Spanish Flu’.
It goes without saying that a pandemic IS a major disruption to the daily lives of the inhabitants of planet earth.
There is a marked difference a century makes since our last pandemic, with the stark advancement of technology and innovation.
Compared to the last global pandemic, our world has changed much in a lot of ways a hundred years after.
Technology-wise for sure. The internet was surely non-existent in the 1910s.
So bringing this into perspective, nations and societies are adapting and adjusting quite easily to the inconveniences wrought by the covid 19 scourge. Offices and workplaces have instituted WFH (Work From Home) arrangements for their employees and this has certainly offered a viable convenient solution to the inconveniences that a worldwide pandemic brings to nations and their economies.
For the solopreneur or work-from-home entrepreneur, working from home may present some problems. In my case I struggle with focus and productivity.
No, its not because Im watching Netflix all the time. A side note here..before the lockdown, I had a Netflix subscription which I hardly used. I liked watching my movies at my local cineplex, with my munchies and beverage of choice. I watch solo usually, just like I frequent the coffeeshops by myself for my regular indulgence of black coffee while I netsurf on my laptop.
I still have my Netflix subscription which I now use quite regularly precisely because the cinemas are shut down and streaming movie channels are now my vehicles to indulge in escapist fantasies.. But they are certainly a distraction – if you want to get some real work done.
Did I mention that I struggle with focus and productivity? It’s much easier now to indulge in streaming movie marathons with the pandemic ongoing. Sure its good to take a break now and then especially with the stress and anxiety that comes with all the bad news about coronavirus.
But I find I have to discipline myself, to motivate myself. Procrastination is all too familiar to me.
My mindset seems all about instant pleasure and gratification. I’m not proud of that.
Im taking some online courses as part of my personal reinvention but I personally struggle with motivation. And I generally cannot get myself to focus on my courses and progress along and get productive.
And if I do get myself to do so, it’s an uphill struggle.
In other to get over the hump, it really starts with mindset and other best practices. I just have to get it done.
As long as I plod along even with just little steps. As long as I move I’m going to get where I’m going.
It’s a habit that I honestly really have to work at..
And when progress is made, more motivation comes in turn..
And this process will feed on itself.
At at the end of any day, Netflix is a good way to end it.
That is, AFTER a productive day.
Do you work from home? How do you keep yourselves motivated, focused, and productive?
Let me know.
